The programme featured his iconic video The Reflecting Pool (1977–79), an early work that established many of the themes and techniques that would become central to Viola’s practice.

In The Reflecting Pool, a man emerges from a forest and approaches a pool before appearing to leap into the air and become suspended above the water. The surrounding landscape continues to change while the figure remains motionless, creating a tension between movement and stillness, presence and absence. Through the manipulation of time and motion, Viola transforms a simple physical action into a meditation on perception, transformation and the passage of time.

Presented through Film and Video Umbrella’s touring programme, The Reflecting Pool introduced UK audiences to Viola’s distinctive use of slow motion, repetition and extended duration. The work demonstrated how video could move beyond conventional narrative and documentary forms to become a contemplative and immersive medium. Its emphasis on silence, stillness and elemental imagery reflects Viola’s longstanding interest in the spiritual and psychological dimensions of human experience.

A Thoughtful Gaze was significant in bringing Viola’s early video practice to a wider British audience. At a time when video was still establishing its position within contemporary art, the programme demonstrated the medium’s potential to explore fundamental questions of identity, consciousness, mortality and transcendence.

Viola’s practice developed from his early experiments with video in the 1970s into large-scale installations that combine technology with imagery drawn from spiritual and artistic traditions. Influenced by Zen Buddhism, Sufism, Christian mysticism and Renaissance painting, he repeatedly returned to water, fire, light and the human body as metaphors for transformation, death and renewal.

The presentation of The Reflecting Pool through A Thoughtful Gaze represents an important early chapter in Viola’s relationship with UK audiences and in the wider recognition of video as a medium capable of sustained philosophical and spiritual enquiry.

Bio

Bill Viola (1951–2024) was an American video artist whose pioneering practice transformed the possibilities of video and time-based art. Born in New York, he began working with video in the early 1970s and developed a distinctive visual language exploring birth, death, consciousness, suffering and transcendence. His work was influenced by Zen Buddhism, Sufism, Christian mysticism and Renaissance art.

Viola represented the United States at the Venice Biennale in 1995 with Buried Secrets, followed by the major retrospective Bill Viola: A 25-Year Survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1997. Other significant exhibitions included Bill Viola: The Passions at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the National Gallery, London (2003–04), Hatsu-Yume (First Dream) at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2006–07), and Bill Viola / Michelangelo: Life, Death, Rebirth at the Royal Academy of Arts, London (2019).

His work is held in major international collections and has been exhibited extensively around the world. Viola died in 2024, leaving an influential body of work that established video as a powerful medium for exploring spiritual, psychological and existential experience.

Project Details

Year: 1988
Artist: Bill Viola
Programme: A Thoughtful Gaze
Year of work: 1977–79
Curated by: Film and Video Umbrella
Format: Touring programme / video art
Country: United States / United Kingdom

[28,34,29,32,51,9

post-2698","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-curating","category-education","category-exhibition","category-moving-image","category-performance","category-projects
["GET
