Keith Whittle is a curator, writer, and visiting professor based between London and Tokyo, with over two decades’ experience in contemporary art. His curatorial practice combines research and exhibition-making, with a particular focus on commissioning new work.

Beginning his career through group and solo exhibitions, presenting work by Jo Spence and Rosy Martin, pivotal figures in British feminist art and photography from the late 1970s onward, alongside exhibitions exploring art, activism, and epidemiology during the global AIDS pandemic, as well as a solo show of pioneering Nigerian-born photographer Rotimi Fani-Kayode, whose work examined identity, sexuality, race, and religion while challenging Western perceptions of Africa and the African diaspora.

He later focused on touring pioneering exponents of experimental film and video art such as Marina Abramović & Ulay, Vito Acconci, Bill Viola, and Gary Hill, Later joined by the emerging Young British Artists (YBAs)—Sam Taylor-Johnson, Georgina Starr, Douglas Gordon, Jane and Louise Wilson—and American peers Alex Bag and Vanessa Beecroft. This was followed by working on newly commissioned works and large-scale national touring solo exhibitions of artists’ film with figures such as Abigail Lane, Michael Landy, Turner Prize winners Gillian Wearing and Mark Leckey, nominees Isaac Julien and Janice Kerbel, and Sonia Boyce, recipient of the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.

Subsequently, through exhibitions, residencies, talks, and live programmes, foregrounding East Southeast Asian artists working across painting, moving image, performance, photography, and installation—including Satoru Aoyama, Shigeo Anzaï, Chim↑Pom, Fan Chon Hoo, Taro Izumi, Jia Aili, Jiang Zhi, Mari Katayama, Meiro Koizumi, Kyunchome, Yuko Mohri, Aki Sasamoto, Mio Shirai, Sun Xun, and Chikako Yamashiro.

Concurrently, as curator and programme director for international residencies and exhibitions, he oversaw new commissions and presentations of work by Erika Tan, Sutapa Biswas, Adam Chodzko, and site-specific projects by Adel Abdessemed and Michael Lin, as well as displays of work by Turner Prize winner Elizabeth Price and pioneering British filmmaker, artist, writer, set designer, and activist Derek Jarman. Also events examining Biennialisation and developments in the art world under globalisation, in collaboration with artists, curators and academics including Lewis Biggs, Adrian Favell, Leah Gordon, Yuko Hasegawa, Fram Kitagawa, Shubigi Rao, Mark Rappolt, Andrea Schlieker, Takeshi Serizawa, Mizuki Takahashi, and Koki Tanaka.

Formerly responsible for artists’ moving image projects at Film and Video Umbrella, the UK’s leading agency for commissioning and producing moving-image works, presented in collaboration with galleries and cultural partners across the country. Similarly, New Media Exhibitions and Digital Media Art Festival at the ICA | Institute of Contemporary Arts, exploring the possibilities of digital media and moving image in collaboration with international artists and digital media specialists.

Fellow and Director of Time-Based Media Art at the University of Sunderland, responsible for researching and curating new media and moving image projects in collaboration with regional, national, and international partners. Additionally, as Adjunct Researcher at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, Germany, he explored institutional archives and curatorial strategies focused on time-based media, including video, film, slides, audio, and both physical and digital computer technologies.
