Commission: Mark Leckey
Parade is a single-screen video and sound installation by Mark Leckey (b. 1964, Birkenhead, UK), commissioned for the Brighton Photo Biennial and presented at Fabrica as part of *Make Life Beautiful! The Dandy in Photography.
The work offers a surreal and unsettling meditation on style, subculture and metropolitan identity. A solitary male figure moves through a psychedelic, consumerist landscape, suggesting a speculative vision of the modern dandy as both seduced and consumed by his surroundings.
Drawing on fashion, music video, advertising and popular culture, *Parade* combines distorted imagery with a fractured repetition of the word “PARADE”, creating a hypnotic and claustrophobic atmosphere. The work continues Leckey’s longstanding exploration of youth culture, nostalgia, class and collective memory, while questioning identity and desire in an increasingly image-saturated culture.
Mark Leckey is a British artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores youth culture, popular media, nostalgia, class and collective memory. His work has been exhibited at Tate Britain, Tate Modern, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London. He represented Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 and was awarded the Turner Prize in 2008.
