Site-Specific: Sutapa Biswas
Mata Ne (See You Soon) is a solo exhibition by British-Indian artist Sutapa Biswas, presented at Fujiya Gallery, Beppu. Sutapa Biswas (b. 1962, Shantiniketan, West Bengal) developed the exhibition during a two-month residency as part of the Kashima Artist in Residence 2015.
The exhibition brings together video and mixed-media works centred on the personal testimonies of women from Oita Prefecture. Through intimate stories of labour, migration, memory and survival, Biswas brings overlooked histories into focus and challenges dominant narratives of Japanese national history.
Drawing on oral history and autobiographical practice, Mata Ne (See You Soon) explores the relationships between identity, geography and belonging. Biswas approaches personal testimony as a form of resistance and collective memory, connecting individual experiences with wider questions of displacement, home and power.
Sutapa Biswas is a British-Indian artist whose interdisciplinary practice explores colonial histories, gender, race, class, memory and identity. Her work has been exhibited at Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Whitechapel Gallery, Yale University Art Gallery and Neuberger Museum of Art, as well as the Art Gallery of Ontario, Havana Biennial and Melbourne International Arts Festival. In 2014–15, she was Tate Artist in Residence for RadioCity. In 2021, she presented a major solo exhibition at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead.
